Heart Disease Cases Rise Across India as Advanced Angioplasty Technologies Transform Coronary Care

Coronary Artery Disease is rising rapidly across India, including among younger individuals. Leading cardiologists highlight advancements in angioplasty, Drug-Eluting Stents, BioResorbable Scaffolds, Drug-Coated Balloons, and calcium management technologies that are improving treatment outcomes while emphasizing the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.

Coronary Artery Disease continues to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with India witnessing a particularly alarming rise in cases. Changing lifestyles, increasing stress levels, unhealthy dietary habits, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and physical inactivity have significantly contributed to the growing burden of heart disease across all age groups.

Medical experts have warned that Coronary Artery Disease is no longer a condition affecting only older adults. An increasing number of younger individuals are being diagnosed with complex coronary blockages, making early detection and timely treatment more critical than ever. Common warning signs, including chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive fatigue, dizziness, and reduced exercise tolerance, should not be ignored, as prompt medical intervention can substantially improve patient outcomes.

The field of interventional cardiology has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, enabling specialists to treat coronary blockages with greater precision, safety, and long-term effectiveness. Modern angioplasty techniques now incorporate ultra-thin strut Drug-Eluting Stents (DES), specialized bifurcation stents designed for complex vessel anatomy, and long tapered stents developed to treat extensive coronary lesions while preserving optimal blood flow.

Beyond conventional stenting, metal-free angioplasty approaches are emerging as promising treatment options for selected patients. BioResorbable Scaffolds (BRS) provide temporary support to blood vessels before gradually dissolving over time, while Drug-Coated Balloons (DCB) deliver anti-proliferative medication directly to the vessel wall without the need for a permanent implant. These innovations support the broader objective of preserving the natural physiology of coronary arteries while expanding treatment options for patients with Coronary Artery Disease.

Speaking on the evolution of coronary interventions, Dr. Kishore K S, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Sagar Hospitals, Bengaluru, said, “The philosophy of ‘Leave Nothing Behind’ is transforming the future of coronary interventions. While Drug-Eluting Stents continue to play a crucial role in treating complex Coronary Artery Disease, newer treatment modalities such as BioResorbable Scaffolds and Drug-Coated Balloons are expanding our therapeutic options. These technologies allow us to tailor treatment according to the patient’s condition while reducing the amount of permanent metallic implants within the coronary arteries. The ability to restore vessel function while potentially leaving nothing behind represents a significant advancement in patient-centric cardiac care.”

Another major challenge in contemporary angioplasty remains the treatment of heavily calcified coronary lesions, which can complicate procedures and affect long-term outcomes. Recent advances in calcium modification technologies are enabling physicians to prepare these difficult lesions more effectively before stent implantation.

Highlighting the importance of calcium management, Dr. Anand R. Shenoy, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru, said, “Coronary artery calcification remains one of the most challenging aspects of angioplasty. Adequate calcium management is essential to ensure optimal stent expansion and long-term procedural success. Advanced lesion preparation techniques and calcium modification technologies, including specialty balloons, atherectomy systems, and intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), now allow us to treat complex calcified blockages more effectively than ever before. By addressing calcium appropriately before intervention, we can improve procedural outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance the quality of care delivered to patients with complex Coronary Artery Disease.”

Despite significant technological progress in treatment, cardiologists continue to emphasize that prevention remains the most effective defense against Coronary Artery Disease. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, engaging in regular physical activity, following a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco use, managing stress, and undergoing routine health screenings can substantially reduce cardiovascular risk.

With the growing availability of advanced angioplasty solutions and increasing awareness of heart health, medical experts believe that patients diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease now have access to safer, more personalized, and highly effective treatment options than at any time in the past. The combination of preventive care, early diagnosis, and next-generation interventional technologies is expected to play a crucial role in improving cardiac outcomes and addressing the rising burden of heart disease in India.
